BASIC TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURES

WHEN YOU RECEIVE AN ERROR ON YOUR COMPUTER, OR IF IT IS BEHAVING ABNORMALLY, FOLLOW THESE BASIC TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS IN ORDER TO QUICKLY RESOLVE A COMPUTING ERROR OR AT LEASE OBTAIN THE FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE ERROR PRIOR TO CONTACTING TECHNICAL SUPPORT.


STEP 1:

DOCUMENT OR "PRINT-OUT" ANY ERROR MESSAGE YOU RECEIVE AND DETAIL THE ACTIONS YOU PERFORMED TO RECEIVE THE ERROR(S).

(TO "PRINT-OUT" AN ERROR MESSAGE ALONG WITH ALL THE INFORMATION ON THE COMPUTER SCREEN AT THAT TIME, PRESS THE "PRINT SCREEN/SYS RQ" BUTTON IN THE UPPER RIGHT SECTION OF THE KEYBOARD, THEN OPEN YOUR WORD PROCESSOR (IE: MS WORD) THEN USE THE "PASTE" COMMAND FROM THE "EDIT" MENU)

STEP 2:

CLOSE ALL APPLICATIONS AND "SHUT DOWN" OR "RESTART" YOUR COMPUTER, DO NOT SIMPLY POWER OFF THE COMPUTER (IF IT CAN BE PREVENTED).

STEP 3:

POWER UP YOUR COMPUTER AND OBSERVE ITS OPERATION:

  • DOES IT APPEAR TO "ACT" NORMALLY?
  • DO YOU GET YOUR NORMAL SCREEN AND/OR LOGIN PROMPT?
  • VERIFY YOUR "LOGIN NAME" AND PASSWORD

STEP 4:

OPEN (START) ONLY THE APPLICATION YOU RECEIVED THE ERROR OR "LOCK-UP" IN AND REATTEMPT THE SAME ACTION YOU WERE TRYING TO PERFORM WHEN THE APPLICATION FAILED BEFORE.

  • DID THE APPLICATION PERFORM PROPERLY THIS TIME?

IF NOT, ATTEMPT THE SAME FUNCTION ON A DIFFERENT COMPUTER TO IDENTIFY IF IT IS A LOCAL COMPUTER ISSUE OR A NETWORK RELATED ISSUES.

  • DID THE APPLICATION PERFORM PROPERLY THIS TIME?
